Common questions
Frequently asked questions
What dogs do you work with?
I specialize in herding breeds such as Border Collies, Australian Cattle Dogs, shepherds, and similar working-line dogs. These breeds often struggle in modern homes when their instincts, sensitivity, and drive collide with everyday environments.
While I have worked with all breeds and behavioural types, my focus is on helping dogs who are struggling with deep-rooted, misunderstood issues that affect their quality of life.
If you have a dog of any breed who is deeply struggling, please feel free to reach out.
What behaviour issues do you help with?
I work with complex behaviour cases, including:
- Reactivity
- Fear and anxiety
- Aggression
- Compulsive behaviours (light chasing, spinning, shadow chasing, etc.)
- Sound sensitivity and noise phobias
How do virtual sessions work?
All consultations are conducted virtually, which allows me to work with clients across North America, the UK, and internationally. Initial sessions typically last 60–90 minutes.
During the consultation, we will go through your dog's behavioural and medical history, their daily life and environment, and the patterns you are seeing. Rather than placing dogs in situations where they might react for demonstration purposes, I will work with you to resolve unwanted behaviour.
Consultations are safe, friendly, conversational and non-judgmental. I welcome clients of all identities and backgrounds. This is an LGBTQIA+ affirming, neurodiversity-affirming space that welcomes people of colour and people from all cultures. Respect, safety, and inclusivity are expected in all interactions.
Why does my veterinarian need to be involved?
Behaviour and health are closely connected. Pain, neurological issues, discomfort, and other medical factors can significantly affect behaviour. Because of this, veterinary collaboration is needed in all cases to properly evaluate and address potential medical contributors.
While this can seem overwhelming, especially if your dog is afraid of the vet, that's where I come in. I'm here to help you navigate the system and will give you a complete report to take to your veterinarian. I've worked through thousands of medical and behavioural cases with veterinary partners.
Do you use force-free training methods?
Yes. I work exclusively with force-free handling and training methods that prioritize the dog's welfare and emotional safety.
My goal is to help dogs feel safer and more capable in their environment. Trying to build confidence and emotional stability while also introducing pain or fear is like trying to help someone regain their balance while the ground beneath them keeps shifting.
I currently use a shock collar or other aversive tools. Can we still work together?
If you have used these tools in the past but are no longer using them, then yes, we can absolutely work together.
If you are committed to continuing to use these tools, then I am not the right consultant for your case. For dogs struggling with fear, anxiety, or aggression, adding additional stress or discomfort can make recovery much more difficult.
What if I feel embarrassed about my dog's behaviour?
Please don't be. Many of the dogs I work with have serious behavioural struggles, including aggression, reactivity, and bite histories. My role is not to judge you or your dog.
Behaviour challenges happen for many reasons, and the goal is simply to understand what is happening and help improve things moving forward. Even if you feel responsible for your dog's struggles, you're here now, and that's what matters.
